I was definitely the little guy out there. But despite stock tires and open diffs, I went everywhere everyone else did. I think the next smallest Jeep was the TJ on 33's, compared to my 235/75/15's. Two JK’s on 35's and the JKU Rubi on 37's.

We went out to Red Deer Falls, in the Tumbler Ridge, BC area. The trail wasn’t too intense, apart from a couple washouts. Beautiful country though.

Kinja'd!!!

The guy driving the TJ was talking smack about JK’s cause one of the two-doors lifted a wheel on the way into that washout, while the long and low ZJ walked through it like it was nothing, no drama at all. Everyone including myself was surprised about that.

The last two photos are screencaps stolen from a video one of the guys posted. I was busy having a good time and didn’t always think to take photos, but I did get a couple.

Beautiful British Columbia indeed. And a bonus #Neature shot. Butterflies like JK’s. Who woulda stunk.

That looks like a lot of fun in a very pretty place.

Oooh, I like. It’s funny the way wheelbase changes Wheeling. A line that a long wheelbase will seriously struggle with a super short will just roll through and vice versa. Ditto track width. I’ve found that the majority of vehicles that run and have historical run a trail dictate how easy it hard it will be on your vehicle. My medium wheelbase land cruiser is benefited on most Utah trails because it’s either been short Wrangler, or 4 door jkus. Im Right in between so the ruts and cuts still have meat in places that have been worn away in places jkus have been.

Running Lockhart basin with a tj and 2 4 door short bed midsize trucks was interesting.

93 inch wheelbase, 112 inch wheelbase, 127 wheelbase. At 106, you’re in a great place.

I don’t know that the ZJ is all that much longer in wheelbase than a JKU. Actually I just looked it up and the ZJ’s wheelbase is over ten inches shorter... Another surprise, the JK is 95.4 /116" vs the ZJ’s 105.9". But he has more lift and almost 10" larger- diameter tires, so there’s that. The ZJ really isn’t a whole heck of a lot bigger than an XJ, and given zero options on mine, it’s not all that much heavier than an XJ , either, probably close to the 3700lbs the 2-door JK weighs, less if you add on bumpers, winches, big tires, etc.

I’ve always been pretty happy with my 103” LJ, but I’ve never tried anything else. I’d definitely like to have a SWB TJ someday just to find out. Or a flattie, swoon.

103 is a great wheelbase. Not so sensitive to cross ax le ti pping but still nimble

Cheap wheeling is best wheeling. I have a dirty WJ and have a blast running trails with it, despite also having a very nice JK Willys that should be “better” at just about everything. I love filling my Grand Minivan with camping gear, beer, and a bunch of CDs (stock Infiniti sound system for maximum class) and having an old fashioned trail party!

This was actually my first time doing any sort of wheeling with a manual, and I’ve got to say I definitely preferred it over an automatic. There were a couple other spots that were less intimidating than the one washout there because they weren’t quite so “at the bottom of a hole” type spots, with a bit more of a rock-crawling (okay, small rocks, maybe 8-12" diameter size) aspect to them. You dont need quite so much momentum to just slowly bump over them, instead of having your torque converter slipping and causing you to stop dead for a larger obstacle, so you need to push the gas harder to build up way more torque than you want once you get up and over the small bump.

The ZJ’s my daily, so not exactly the cheap wheeler, more the one I don’t want to break. I unfortunately had to get rid of the one I could thrash  without caring last week... although I’m kinda happy to see it gone.

Ughhhh I am ridiculously jealous that these trails are reachable for you... Last time we went real 4-wheeling, we towed our FJ40 from Tennessee to California.
